Aang’s POV
I said the most stupid things when I had my one chance to tell her my true feelings. It was perfect. We were all alone and there was no way for anyone to get in the way. But I had to go and screw it up. We were stuck in that cave of two lovers. I used to blush at the name of it. Anyway, We all got separated. Sokka, Momo and those hippies got trapped on one side of the rock fall and me, Katara and Appa on the other. Me and Katara walked through the twisting and ever changing paths, Appa following us. We didn’t talk to each other until we came to a large, round door.
“This must be the exit!” Katara shouted.
We pushed as hard as we could to move the door, but it wouldn’t budge. Then we heard Appa grunt behind us. We faced each other, then ran out of Appa’s way as he rammed the door down. We climbed through the door, but we didn’t find an exit.
“This isn’t an exit.” I said. “It’s a tomb.”
We climbed down a flight of stairs and walked over to the coffins. Katara read about this couple called Oma and Shu. They were unable to be together because of the war, so they built a labyrinth for them to meet in so that no-one would find out about their love. But one day the guy didn’t show up. He had died in the war. The woman ended the war and the city was named Omashu. That’s all I can remember. Then we turned around and saw a picture of the couple from the coffins kissing.
“Love is brightest…in the dark.” Katara read in a whisper. We stood in silence staring at the statue. I thought of another couple kissing like the people in the statue…
“I have a crazy idea…” Katara said suddenly, but then she stopped.
“What?” I asked her.
“Never mind, it’s…to crazy.” She turned away from me. I wanted to know what she was thinking though, so I asked her again.
“What is it, Katara?” I wasn’t expecting her to say what she said after this.
“What if we…kissed?” she asked, her cheeks blushing deeply, as she turned to face me again.
I didn’t know what to do. I hadn’t expected her to say this. I was in complete shock.
“Us, kissing?” I hate myself for saying that. It sounds so stupid now that I think back.
“Yeah…it was pretty stupid.” she said turning again.
“Us…kissing…” I began to day dream about the two of us, alone. Kissing. It was a beautiful sight, but it was interrupted by Katara;
“Us kissing! What was I thinking? Can you imagine that?” she tried to laugh as though she had been saying it as a joke. I came back to the real world, shaking my dreams from my head.
“Yeah…” Had she noticed me day dreaming? I laughed nervously. That’s when I started to blurt out stupid things that I really hadn’t meant to say. “I definitely wouldn’t want to kiss you.” When I turned to face Katara, I knew that that had been the worst thing to say.
“Oh, well I didn’t know that it was such a horrible option. Sorry I suggested it.”
I knew that I had to say something fast, to make up for what I had just said, but no. I just made it ten times worse.
“No! I meant if it was between kissing you and dying…” I could tell, even by looking at her back, that she was beyond boiling point. Her whole body was stiff. I have put the last thing that she said out of my mind, but I remember her walking off and me saying,
“What’s wrong with me?”
Bloody, was I stupid! I cringe at the memory. She didn’t talk to me for about an hour, so I decided to keep quiet. However, I noticed that the candle, our only source of light was running out.
“We’re gonna run out of light any second now, aren’t we?” I asked her. I was surprised when she turned around and talked to me.
“I think so.” She came closer to me and put her hand on top of mine so that she was holding the candle as well. I looked up into her eyes and saw her face coming closer to mine. I moved mine closer to hers, then we closed our eyes, the lights went out and…we kissed. It was like heaven. After a few moments we pulled apart and saw that green crystals on the ceiling had lit up to lead the way out of the two lovers cave.
“We did it!” Katara said happily as she hugged me tight. I returned the hug gladly. When we pulled apart, I realised what had just happened.
“So…um…” I began, but Katara was already heading down the path towards the exit. I shook my head, smiled and followed her.
