Aang felt shaky. His hands were beginning to sweat. He was finally going to make his move. He walked over to a soft bit of ground and sat down. He began to carve a beautiful necklace. On it he carved the water and air symbols and he attached it to a dark, navy ribbon and held it up to examine it.
“Three years.. three years I’ve waited.” he whispered to himself. Aang placed the necklace in his breast pocket so that it would not get damaged. This was no ordinary necklace: it was a gift, like an engagement ring.
Aang got up and walked back to the camp. Only Katara was there as Sokka had gone to fetch clean water for them to drink.
“Katara… I… I have to ask you something that’s really, really important.”
Katara turned to face him.
“What is it?” she asked.
Aang had no experience what so ever in proposing, but he had the general idea.
“Katara…” Aang began. He felt really nervous, but he had to do it now; he knew he had to.
“Katara.” He knelt down on one knee and reached into his breast pocket. Katara had an expression of utmost shock on her face, but she remained as calm as she could.
Aang pulled out the necklace he had made for her.
“Will you marry me?”
Katara felt her breathing stop. She gazed up at Aang.
“I… I will.” she whispered.
Aang stood up, a large smile on his face. He pulled her towards him and kissed her. He had never felt this way in his life. It felt wonderful.
They decided to keep the marriage a secret for a day or two to give Sokka a proper surprise.

Sokka was asleep, but Aang and Katara were still awake. They were hiding behind a nearby tree in case Sokka woke. They were kissing. When they had finally decided to get some sleep, they got into their sleeping bags and lay down in silent thought.
* * * * *
Katara woke up and rubbed her eyes. She got up and walked over to the lake to wash her face. She cupped her hands and scooped up some water; she felt refreshed by its coolness. Katara bent over the water. Her reflection looked different in the ripples. As they stopped she screamed although the scream was not hers: it was Aang’s.
* * * * *
Aang woke with a start. He had heard a loud scream come from near the lake. He sat up and rubbed his eyes. He felt really warm. Aang listened for the scream: it did not come again.
“Must have imagined it…” Aang put his hand over his mouth. His voice sounded different than usual. He looked down at his arms. There were no tattoos. He grabbed a section of hair and gaped at it. It was extremely long and brown. His was normally short and blue.
“This is just a dream.” he thought to himself. Then he thought of one way to check if he really was in a dream. He closed his eyes, tilted his head downwards and pulled his shirt so that he could see down his front. He opened his eyes and screamed.
“Those are definitely not mine!” he said. “A high pitched voice, no tattoos, long brown hair and a different body shape… I’M KATARA!”
* * * * *
Katara gaped at her reflection. She could not believe it.
“I’M AANG!”
She looked down at her chest.
“This is wrong… hang on… if I’m Aang then he’s… OH CRAP!” She got up and ran back to the camp.
“Aang! AANG!”
Aang looked up.
“Hey this is weird, isn’t it?”
Katara looked at him with a look that suggested she wanted to murder him.
“How did you check if you were… well, me?” she asked him.
“Well I… I looked for my tattoos… and the hair… and… well…”
“Oh, you didn’t! You didn’t, did you?” Katara glared at him.
“Did I do what?” Aang blushed crimson.
“Oh Aang! You jerk! YOU FOUL LITTLE JERK!” She ran at him. Aang ran for his life. She may be in his body, but she could still run fast and she still had her anger management problems.
Katara ran as fast as she could to try and catch him.
“I’M GONNA KILL YOU!” She was just a few feet away now. Three feet, two feet, one foot…
She threw herself onto him and fell on top of him.
“What do you think your doing to my sister?” It was Sokka.
“What?... oh crap.” Katara jumped off of Aang and stood up. Aang stood up as well.
“Well? What the bloody heck were you two doing?” Sokka was growing angrier.
“Well… listen Sokka. We’re not who you think we are. I’m Katara and that’s Aang.” Katara said pointing at what had been her body the previous night. Sokka began to laugh.
“Ha, ha, ha. Very funny Aang. I’m not gonna kill you now, but believe me… next time I see you on top of my sister like that I swear… I will kill you. Literally.” Sokka went back to the camp and left Katara and Aang in a confused state.
“He’s never gonna believe us, is he?” Aang asked.
“No. He’s not.” Katara sighed. She walked over to Aang and hugged him tight.
“Okay! This is beyond weird! I’m being hugged by myself.”
“Yeah,” Katara laughed. “It’s weird hugging myself… and being flat.”
“What the?... Oh! Yeah. It’s weird not being flat anymore. Man it’s weird being in my best friends body! ‘specially when my best friend’s a girl. No offence.”
“None taken. I agree. It’s weird being in a guys body.”
“Hang on… how are we gonna … well… you know…”
“What?” Katara asked.
“Well how are we gonna… you know…” Aang made a downward swoop with his arm from his stomach.
“CRAP! That’s a good point. Well, the only way is to not do it.”
“But Katara… I gotta go!”
“NO WAY! Your in my body, so you’ve gotta follow my rules. Even if it means not peeing. NO!” Katara had seen the pleading look in his eyes.
“Dang!” Aang shouted. “Well, you can’t go in my body either then.”
“Yuck! As if I’d want to!” she blushed at the thought. Aang stared at her.
“When you checked if you were me, you didn’t…”
“NO!” Katara shouted.
“Okay! Okay! I believe you!”
* * * * *
They sat at the lake side in silence thinking of what to do next.
“Well… since we’re in each others bodies, we might as well learn each others habits.” Aang suggested.
“Okay… so, what do you that I don’t?” Katara asked him.
“Well… I bite my nails for a start… and I…”
“You what?” Katara could not believe what she was hearing. She never bit her nails.
“I bite my nails… and… I say bloody sometimes. That’s about it really. What about you?”
“Well,” Katara began. “I don’t bite my nails… I fiddle with my hair… I… I sit like a lady.” She saw how Aang was sitting and showed him how to sit whilst he was in her body.
“Well I sit cross legged and rest my elbows on my knees. And I don’t fiddle with my hair like a girl!”
Katara pulled her hand away from her hair guiltily.
“Right. We’ve got to find a way to switch this whole body swapping thing...” Aang stated.
“But how the heck are we gonna switch this?”
Aang thought for a moment.
“Well… it might be as simple as kissing…you know… like in those fairy tales you hear when you’re a kid.”
Katara sat in silence for a moment. Aang stared at the ground trying to come up with another solution.
Suddenly, Aang found… well Katara-in-his-body, on top of him; kissing him. After a few seconds, Aang pushed her off with some difficulty.
“What the heck are you doing?” Aang shouted.
“Well, you suggested to kiss and I thought that if I shocked you, it would shock you out of my body.”
“Well,” Aang said, still in shock. “That definitely did not work. Let’s try to come up with another solution. I’d rather not have my body make out with me thank you very much!” Aang could not help but smile at the situation. Katara smiled as well.
